Congratulations to Anita Edwards and Jessica Lovett in Year 9 and Zakiya Atom-Ra and Fergus McCloskey in Year 10. All four students took part in the International Competition For Young Debaters on Saturday February 5th at Cambridge University.

They were a real credit to our school and were extremely brave, as in many cases, this was their first debating competition. The students debated as to whether dictators should be paid to stand down, if students had a right to sack bad teachers and if alcohol should be banned. It was a great opportunity for students of all abilities to share ideas with one another and argue in a lively and professional manner. It was also wonderful that the students had a chance to visit Cambridge and its beautiful surroundings.

Particularly impressive was the fact that Fergus McCloskey stepped in on Friday, having never debated in public before. He was absolutely outstanding and gained a great deal from the experience. Well done to all students and a big thank you to the parents for driving the students to the event. The teams gained a first and a second place in certain rounds of the competition.
