Year 8 pupils presented a very successful science fair on 2nd July in the Galilee building. The overall standard of work was very high and pupils applied the key skills they have learned during Key stage 3 science lessons. They worked well in teams to test very creative ideas. Teams researched their chosen topic and designed novel experiments to test their hypothesis; displayed and analysed their results; then presented these along with a conclusion and evaluation. They had to self-manage their team in order to meet the deadline for completing and presenting their. The best project displays from each class were selected for the science fair, where pupils presented and explained their work to year 8 pupils and members of staff.

There was an impressive range of investigations on display in the science fair. The judging panel of Mr Dann, Dr Marshall, Mr Wilkinson and Mr Brown chose the following projects as being particularly outstanding:

  • 1st prize - Extracting DNA - Ciara Gibbs, Alecia Khouri, Emily O'Shea
  • 2nd prize– The Effect of different music on plant growth - Vera Baiden, Daniela Tiwo
  • 3rd – The Effectiveness of mouthwash in killing bacteria - Otiti Oboh, Cassina Subero, Christina Amofa
  • 4th – The Effect of different foods on speed of a hamster – Kayleigh Keohane, Aisling Deehan, Reuben Luke

Congratulations to these winning teams and well done for all of year 8 for taking part in this year’s science fair.
