YEAR 9 ONLY

This letter is to inform you of the pathway your child will take in Science this academic year.

GCSE Core Science
(Sets Sc1,Sc2,Sc3,Sc4 Higher, Set Sc5 Foundation)

Your child will begin to learn the content of the GCSE Core Science course this year. They will learn Unit 1 in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. There will be a mock internal exam in the summer of 2014 which will play an integral part in determining set changes for Year 10. In addition there will be a series of tests throughout the year so that we can accurately monitor progress. Please may I take the time to stress just how important this year will be in relation to the grades that your child will achieve by the end of Key Stage 4. The content of this year will be externally tested in either the summer of 2015 or even the summer of 2016 dependent on the pathway your child is placed on in future years. The retention of this year’s scientific information is key, where your child will need to excel in both effort and performance.

Entry Level Science
(Set Sc6)

Your child will complete Entry Level Science over the next two years. In Year 11 your child will be taught the content of GCSE Core Science course, but will need to meet the criteria proposed at the start of the year in order to be entered in the summer of 2016.

YEAR 10 ONLY

This letter is to inform you of the pathway your child will take in Science this academic year.

GCSE Separate Science
(Sets St1 & St2 - commencing January 2014)

This Christmas we will be determining which pupils will be eligible to work towards GCSE Separate Science. They will not be taking any external exams until the summer of 2015. However they will receive progress tests internally up until this stage, the most notable of which will be the internal mock exams in the summer of 2014. In addition they will be completing a controlled assessment in all three scientific disciplines over the two year course.

GCSE Core Science
(Sets Sc1 Higher, Sets Sc2, Sc3 & Sc4 Foundation - commencing January 2014)

In the summer of 2014 your child will sit two external exam papers:

B1/C1/P1 Core Science B2/C2/P2 Core Science

In addition they will also be completing a Core Science controlled assessment. Throughout the year there will be a series of internal tests to monitor progress and you will be made aware of these, as and when they occur. Please may I take this opportunity to stress the following; if your child does not achieve a Grade C in the summer exams, they will not move onto Additional Science in Year 11 and as a result will only receive one GCSE Science grade.

Entry Level Science
(Sets Sb1)

Your child will continue to complete the Entry Level course this year. In Year 11 your child will be taught the content of GCSE Core Science course, but will need to meet the criteria proposed at the start of the year in order to be entered in the summer of 2015
