Every term at Cardinal Wiseman, we hold a Literacy Splash Week in order to promote literacy skills across the school. This term’s focus was on reading, so every subject area created specific homework and classroom activities with this in mind. Quizzes and competitions took place in tutor time too. One of these was a competition to name “Top ten reads before you are sixteen”. The winning entries both came from Year Eight: Mairead Heneghan and Thomas Kenny both won a £10 book token for their selections.
Mairead’s choices were: The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, The Fault in Our Stars by- John Green, Lucky Star by Cathy Cassidy, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by– J.K. Rowling, The Look by Sophie Bennett, The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snickett.
Thomas’ choices were: The Passage by Justin Cronin, A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, The Enemy by Charlie Higson, Retribution Falls: Ketty Jay by Chris Wooding, Wonder by R.J. Palacio, Jimmy Coates: Killer by Joe Craig, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Holes by Louis Sacher, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling.
I am sure you will agree that there are some interesting choices here: you might like to try some of them for yourself!
