On the 10th October Cardinal Wiseman’s rowing team lead by their Coaches Ms Jones and Miss Jennings went to the London Youth Rowing Competition at the University of East London in The London Docklands.

Through the London Youth Rowing scheme Cardinal Wiseman have been introduced to the sport.  After four months of training which included, fitness sessions in the schools new fitness suite, water sessions and LOTS of sweaty sessions on the rowing machines we were ready to represent the school at the national competition.

Given the limited experience of the team we were really proud of our achievements, especially as some school had been rowing for five years:

Year 10 girls – Weronika  Baranomwsha came 4th and Ottiti Oboth came 10th

Year 11 boys – Aaron Sousa -Limbu – 10th place

Year 10 & Year 11 relay teams were both placed in the top six

Year 13 boys - Eisvidas Jonkus – Bronze medal

At the competition it emerged we had another talent – we were also a world class cheering leading team!  All of us got behind not only Wiseman students racing but also those from other schools demonstrating our sportsmanship qualities. The judges even commended us at the end during the prize giving ceremony.

An additional benefit for students who went on the trip was the exhibition about post GCSE’s pathways.  Companies, colleges and universities were there for us to talk to and get a better understanding on what they do and what we need to do work for / get into them.  We left the competition not only feeling motivated to do more rowing but also enthused by the potential career opportunities that lay ahead of us.

Overall The London Youth Rowing Competition was an amazing competition and experience which we are looking forward to competing at again next year
