Our Sixth Form are visited by the Student Finance Tour 2015
On Wednesday 18th November, as part of our Enrichment Programme we welcomed Francesca Venting, who visited our school for The Student Finance Tour 2015. With over 95% of our Year 13 students applying to UCAS and many of them already receiving exciting offers from top universities, including many in Russell Group, the next important step for them is to apply for the student finance. With some changes introduced by the government this year, mainly removing student grants but increasing the amount of student loans, it is vital that students understand it all before they apply. Francesca was able to explain the whole process of application, as well as the repayments system after the graduation, in order to reassure young people that lack of funding should not be a barrier stopping anyone from going to university. As well as all the facts and figures Francesca was also able to share some of her personal experiences. As a recent graduate from University of Leicester, she had to manage her own finances for four years, including paying for accommodation, food and any other living expenses from her student loan. She talked about budgeting and subsidising finances by scholarships, bursaries and part time jobs. She was also able to explain and promote the idea of going abroad for one year as part of your studies and the way you are still supported by the Student Finance England. All the advice was really invaluable and well received by all students. We would like to thank Francesca for her presentation.
The application process for September 2016 will open at the end of January. In order to get a guaranteed first instalment at the start of the academic year, applications must be submitted by the end of May 2016. More information and the on-line applications are available on https://www.gov.uk/student-finance/overview
