Year 12 Economics

Year 12 Economics students travelled to the Citigroup offices in Canary Wharf

On Friday 8th July a group of five Year 12 Economics students travelled to the Citigroup offices in Canary Wharf. They were taking part in a Citigroup Economics Event organised by University of Cambridge for state school students who are interested in economic issues and thinking of applying for Economics, Mathematics or Finance at a competitive university such as Cambridge.

Some of the topics of the presentations were:

  • “What Citigroup looks for in a graduate recruit” James Bardrick – CEO Citgroup UK, Gemma Lines – Head of Graduate recruitment for EMEA
  • “How to prepare a competitive university application for Economics”   Dr.  Michael Sutherland
  • “Why do vacancies and unemployment coexist?” Dr. Jake Bradley, Director of Studies in Economics, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge

This is what two of the participants had to say:

“Citigroup was a really interesting experience,  we were given a talk about what Citigroup does and who they are so I learnt something  new, also one of the people who read through the personal statements at Cambridge University told us what they look for, and it was interesting to know that they prefer you to read into Economics rather than do work experience, and at the end, one of the lecturers for Economics at Cambridge gave us an insight on what the course will be like at university which was good to know.”   Subrina T

“I really enjoyed my visit to Citigroup, it was very interesting and useful to be able to actually experience a work environment that I am interested in for my future. I found the talk from James Bardrick, the CEO of Citigroup, very intriguing and it definitely gave me a much wider understanding on what businesses like Citigroup look for in a graduate recruit. Moreover, being able to meet an admissions tutor from the University of Cambridge was really informative and helped us learn how to put together a competitive application. Overall, the Citigroup visit was very helpful for me personally, and covered all aspects from university to employment with an Economics degree, I was very inspired and was very reassured that Economics is the path I want to take. “     Kamila S
