Content description: 

Paper 1: Understanding the modern world.  

A period study:  America 1920 – 1973, Opportunity and inequality.  

Wider world depth study:  Conflict and tension between East and West, The Cold War 1945 – 1972 

Paper 2: Shaping the nation. 

A thematic study examining change and continuity across a long sweep of history covering the Medieval, Early Modern and Modern eras. 

Thematic study. Britain: Power and the people c.1170 – present day 

British depth study:  Restoration England, 1660 – 1685. 

KS5 (Year12 and Year13)

Content description: 

  • Unit 1    The Tudors: England, 1485-1603.               
  • Unit 2    Germany, Democracy and Nazism, 1918-1945.    
  • Unit 3    The Age of the Crusades - NEA (4,500 word piece of coursework worth 20% of A-Level) 

Success and Achievements: 

  • The History department has a long-standing record of success in GCSE and A Level exams.

  • We are very proud of our many past pupils who have gone on to study History at prestigious universities including Oxford and Cambridge.  
  • We have a reputation for outstanding teaching and high academic expectations of all of our students and actively encourage them to push themselves forward in achieving their goals. 
  • The uptake at GCSE and A Level is high and we attribute this to the passion and enthusiasm that we display in everyday teaching. 

Wider Learning and Enrichment Opportunities 

  • We have a long-standing Year 9 trip to the battlefields and cemeteries of the First World War in France and Belgium every year.
  • We also run trips to The Imperial War Museum, the Battle of Hastings site (Year7), the Tower of London (Year8) and an incredible trip to Poland for Year12 to deepen their knowledge on this country's history.
  • Throughout the year, we will be showing students films related to the topics which they study to further enrich their knowledge on this topic, but also to add to their enjoyment of the subject in general
  • History society is run during the year to allow students to discuss topics they enjoy and find interesting, and to express their love of History outside of a classroom setting.
  • At A-Level, guest speakers are brought in to speak to students and students are encouraged to attend lectures led by the local History Association.
