There is no overt gender selection for the two activity streams, but students who have risked learning too many new activities in the short time available have in the past not achieved the results they would have wished for and we do not in general advise it.

If a student is already at a good club or county standard in a sport included in the exam board syllabus (the syllabus is a wide one and includes, for example, Golf, Judo & Gaelic games, this current year group has a national rowing champion who will of course be assessed at his best sport) I would like to make arrangements for assessment and video evidence almost immediately. Past experience has shown that there will be no time at all to spare later in the course.

As 60 per cent of the exam is based on practical course work, every single lesson includes some small amount of practical assessment so full attendance is vital whatever a students level of experience. Last year students experienced difficulty in getting their kit ready on time for four practical periods a week (2 GCSE & 2 core curriculum). The school has some sweatshirts, Royal blue with the school crest and GCSE physical education logo, PRICE £8.49 it would also be a good idea to buy an extra pair of the royal blue shorts (school price £3). Students should also leave some hard weather gear in their lockers as we are determined not to waste one minute of our courses because of any weather conditions short of active thunder and lightning.

During the course we will advise students or the availability of extra curricula clubs and training before and after school. If a student were not already a member of a school team we would expect them to take advantage of this extra tuition. We will also inform students of courses run by Ealing sports development team and other local sources, some of these will obviously charge fees.

GENERAL ADVICE FOR STUDENTS OPTING FOR GCSE PE

Students considering PE as an option will generally do better if they are:

  • Really enthusiastic about PE and sport generally
  • Good at a range of sports with one or two real sporting strengths
  • In at least one school or club tea
  • Happy with Science-especially Biology
  • Prepared to get to grips with the theoretical side e.g. learn the names of muscles and bones etc
  • Good at seeing the connections between things-eg.food, energy and fitness; psychology, sport and competition.
