Year 9 Visit to the Somme
On Thursady 27rd May 2010, 43 Year 9 students plus 5 members of staff will head off to France and Belgium for the annual History trip to the Somme and Flanders.
These two areas saw the most intense fighting in World War One and today there are many battlefields, trenches and cemeteries of fallen soldiers to visit. The trip is for 2 nights and 3 days and involves visiting Vimy Ridge, Beaumont-Hamel, Thiepval and the town of Ypres, amongst other places.
Every year students remark on how much more they learn about World War One and the extent of lives that were lost. The students stay in the Belgian town of Diksmuide and travel out and around the Somme and Flanders region each day. There is time for shopping in Ypres and much chocolate is bought and eaten.
This trip is the longest running overnight trip at Cardinal Wiseman and even Sixth Formers still tell me that it was a fantastic experience - not just extending their knowledge on World War One, but spending more time with friends and class mates - and of course eating "les frites" and chocolate at every opportunity.
Have a fantastic trip Year 9! Take lots of photos and enjoy yourselves!
