Year 10 Middlesex Rugby Plate Final

Cardinal Wiseman 25  Latymer School 21

From the start of the game Wiseman were on the back foot against a very organised Latymer team who took an early lead within 5 minutes to go 7-0 up. Wiseman started to get back into the game and scored a great try with Raynell Martey breaking from 50 yards to finish in the corner, Mikun was unlucky with a difficult kick to keep the score 7-5. After this Wiseman went back into their shell and conceded some silly penalties to give Latymer the upper hand leading to another converted try to take a 14-5 lead. The game swung back towards Wiseman with Raynell and Gabriel P making long runs only to be stopped by last minute tackles and Wiseman being camped on the Latymer line to only give away another penalty for holding on.

After a reorganisation from Mr Price Wiseman went back out for the 2nd half only to concede a sloppy try pretty much straight from kick off which was again converted to give Latymer a 21-5 lead. This seemed to give Wiseman the wakeup call they needed and they started to move the ball much better. Two breaks from Mikun were stopped with last minute tackles and Raynell had a try wrongly not awarded with the ref saying he had been held up. The boys kept plugging away and got their reward when Jordan Porteous went over in the corner for a great try, Mikun missed another difficult conversion to leave the score 21-10. Wiseman again broke quickly with Raynell going over in the corner to make the score 21-15. Wiseman clearly had the upper hand and continued to put pressure on which was reward when Joe Godfrey went over under the post with Gabriel P taking over kicking duty to give Wiseman a 22-21 lead. Wiseman again broke and received a penalty on the 22 which Gabriel P cooly slotted over to give a 25-21 lead with 8 minutes remaining.

Latymer broke from the kick off and only for an amazing last ditch tackle from Mikun would have had an easy try. Wiseman continued to soak up the pressure with Latymer camped on our line for the remaining 5 minutes but some amazing teamwork kept them out with Latymer conceding a penalty to finish the games which lead to amazing celebrations from the Wiseman team.

Year 11 vs Salvatorians

The Year 11 boys came up against a much more experienced and well drilled Salavatorians team who play regularly on Saturday’s and were up against it from the beginning. Although the boys battled hard many of them had not played Rugby in a number of years and the inexperience told with Wiseman unable to retain the ball and the constant turnovers leading to scores for Salvatorians who ran out comfortable winners in the end. The boys did Wiseman proud by never giving up and to finish runners up in Middlesex is no mean feat.
