Year 10 students were treated to a wonderful performance of Charles Dickens' classic novel A Christmas Carol.
At the time, Year 10 students were in the middle of reading A Christmas Carol in preparation for their English Literature GCSE and their understanding of the text was greatly enhanced by witnessing Dickens' words come to life. Some of the comments made by students were:"...hearing Charles Dickens' words being acted out made reading the novel much more interesting." Poppy Carew
"... what I really liked about it was that the moral message of the novel became much clearer." Christa Atallah"... I felt Scrooge was brought to life for us." Mikun Adeosun
It was a wonderful morning that wholeheartedly got students excited and engaged in what can be challenging language.
In other news, Year 10 are currently enjoying reading an anthology of poetry ranging from The Romantics such as Byron and Shelley through to more contemporary poets such as Daljit Nagra and Carol Ann Duffy. Students are being encouraged to make their own interpretations of the poetry and make links between the poems, not only for their English Literature GCSE but we hope also for lifelong pleasure. They each have their own copy of the anthology so please do peek inside it and chat to your child about the poems and their thoughts on them.
Year 11s completed their practice GCSE English exam before Christmas and signs are positive for another very successful set of English results for Year 11 in the summer. Students are currently completing their final Controlled Assessments which is a priority for them in English this half-term.Finally, a happy new year to you all from all in the English Department.
