Year 12 students participated in a week long Lumina Course

Starting on Monday 4th July, seven of our Gifted & Talented Year 12 students participated in a week long Lumina Course, organised by Harrow School for Boys and Twyford C of E Academies Trust and supported by John Lyon’s Charity.

Lumina is a free course for Year 12 students attending state schools in London and considering application to Oxbridge or other competitive Russell Group University.

Over the course of five days, students learned more about Oxbridge, its admissions process and how to choose the right course and college. Some of the highlights of the week were:

  • University-style tutorials, presentations, subject tasters and Q&A panels
  • Interview Practice, Personal Statement Work & Open Day Research
  • Day visits to both Oxford and Cambridge

One of the advantages of attending the course was an opportunity to meet like-minded young people with similar ambitions and getting the inside story from current Oxbridge students. It all helped to demystify Oxbridge and gave our students the confidence to make a strong application to university.

These are some of the comments we received from our students:

“It is evident a lot of time, money, and effort is invested into the Lumina course by Harrow School and their partners. This is seen in how insightful the week was, and also the extent to which I enjoyed it, even having actual Oxbridge admission officers and lecturers giving us lectures on a subject we feel passionate about. This and the fact we were also surrounded by Oxbridge students gave us an invaluable opportunity to ask relevant questions and discover, to a greater extent, the two universities. Though this was very exciting, the most beneficial experience of the week was most certainly being around like minded individuals with similar passions and motivations. The company of these people, paired with the environment of Oxbridge when we went there, was a feeling that can almost only be replicated through actually attending the universities. The Lumina course is an amazing one and I would recommend it to anyone with an intention of applying to a top university.” Mohamed Alhadi

"Lumina has been a very engaging experience, each aspect of it has helped with preparing for university. Throughout the course we were given useful advice on our personal statement and began drafting our applications with the help of undergraduates from Oxbridge. The subject tutorials and lectures were all interesting experiences; the professors/doctors provided and insight on admissions tests and an intro to the first years of our chosen subject/s. The trips to Cambridge and Oxford will be the most memorable; we were given tours by current students who explained their 'daily routine' and experience at the college they chose, answering all questions and helping us with deciding which uni/college to choose."
