THERE was victory for the No campaign in the Cardinal Wiseman mock Alternative Vote (AV) referendum, though by a slightly closer margin than the national result.
62% of voters said they wanted to retain the current First Past the Post system, with 38% saying 'Yes' to a change to AV. A total of 309 votes were cast by staff and sixth form students.
The 'No' vote was strongest among female students (80%) but, interestingly, it was female staff who were most likely to vote 'Yes' to AV (63%).
If only the students had voted, the margin of victory for 'No' would have been 67% to 33%. However, if only staff had voted there would have been the most marginal of 'Yes' votes (51% to 49%).
The Year 12 Politics class deserves a great deal of credit for their excellent campaigns, speeches, and the way in which they organised a very successful event.
