Gifted and Talented
Gifted and Talented Learners at Cardinal Wiseman School
'Gifted and talented' describes young people with an ability to develop to a level significantly ahead of their year group, or with the potential to develop those abilities. Some children excel in particular areas, learn faster than others or have high potential but may still be underachieving.
The progress of every one of our gifted and our talented students is very important to us at Cardinal Wiseman. We target and educate each student to ensure that they continue to develop and are challenged. In 2013, almost a quarter of our students gained five or more GCSEs at A* and A grades. In the 6th form, at A2 level, 72 % of students gained three or more A-C grades and 39% achieved three or more A* to B grades. This has been matched by a large proportion of our students attending top ranked universities this year, including Oxford University, Cambridge University, Kings College and Warwick. All our students in the sixth form who studied for their Extended Project Qualification passed with 60% gaining between B and A*
'Gifted' learners are those who have abilities in one or more academic subjects, like maths and English. Our gifted and more able students are the top 10% of students based on the KS2 SAT scores and Cognitive Ability Tests (CATs) taken early in year 7 and also those demonstrating commitment and motivation. After initial setting, these students experience a dynamic and challenging curriculum as well as a broad enrichment programme. As a result of this programme, in the last couple of years, some of our gifted students reached the Debating Matters National Final at the Royal College of Surgeons, others were in the Spelling Bee National Final at the University of Cambridge and one student won the Spelling Bee National Final in French. Our pupils have traditionally done very well in the UK Maths Trust Challenge, with one pupil being in the top 500 nationally in last year’s competition. The school is a member of the National Association of Gifted Children.
Our talented students are those who possess a high level or potential for high level in physical activity, sports, music, drama, technology and the expressive arts. Our trained staff encourage them to participate in school, local and national clubs and competitions. These help to enhance student knowledge, expertise and skill beyond the constraints of the classroom.
We have a broad range of enrichment activities available:
